From the Desk of Congressman Doug LaMalfa

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for impeaching President Donald Trump. I appreciate you taking the time to share your views with me and your patience while waiting for a response. I strongly agree that President Trump and all elected leaders must uphold their oaths to support and protect the Constitution, and I firmly believe that no person is above the law in our nation.
It is undeniable that President Trump has faced much opposition and scrutiny over the course of his presidency. Donald J. Trump was elected President of the United States on November 8th, 2016. In the months following, U.S. law enforcement agencies and Congress sought to investigate claims that Donald Trump’s presidential campaign colluded with the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report is the result of this two-year investigation. On April 16, 2019, Attorney General William Barr released the redacted report to Congress and the public. The redacted report was released to Congress and the public and there was no finding of evidence linking the Trump Campaign, the President, or his family to any allegation of Russian collusion. Attorney General Barr also concluded that there was no actionable obstruction.
Over the past few weeks, details have emerged about a whistle-blower complaint from within the intelligence community regarding a phone call between President Trump and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy on July 25, 2019. On September 23, 2019, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced her support for a formal impeachment inquiry. The next day, President Trump released the transcript of his phone call with President Zelenskiy. On September 26, 2019, Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire testified before the House Intelligence Committee. On the same day, the White House declassified the whistle-blowers complaint and the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community’s report and released it to the public.
Although we may not see eye to eye on this issue, I believe the Democrats are simply looking for any opportunity to impeach President Trump, rather than logically looking at the facts. Now, they are searching for something impeachable within a transcript and complaint which are underwhelming and unconvincing to say the least. Speaker Pelosi spoke too soon when she announced her support for an impeachment inquiry before reading the contents of the transcript and complaint.
At this time, I do not believe that there is sufficient evidence to impeach President Trump. I will stay abreast of the investigations as it continues, and additional details are revealed. Thank you for your comments, I will keep them in mind here and continue to monitor this situation very closely.
